Plus Learn — Privacy Policy

Last updated 1 September 2026

Plus Learn (“the app”, “we”) is a learning platform for schools in Uganda: a tutor that guides instead of answers, syllabus tracking for teachers and progress reports for parents. It is available on the web at pluslearn.sh and as an app for iPhone and Android. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it goes and your choices. Plus Learn is operated from Kampala, Uganda.

Who uses Plus Learn

Learners sign in with the Plus ID and PIN printed on the card their school issues. Parents create an account with their email address and link a child by entering that child’s Plus ID and PIN. Teachers and administrators use the school’s web app. A school enrols its learners; Plus Learn does not let children create accounts on their own.

What we collect

School records. For each learner the school provides: first and last name, class, sex, and where the school has one, a guardian’s phone number and the school’s fee (SchoolPay) code, which becomes the learner’s Plus ID. The PIN is stored only as a one-way hash.

Learning activity. Answers to questions, hints used, time on task, flashcard reviews, streaks, mastery estimates and the conversation with Pip, the tutor. This is what the app is for: it lets the tutor adapt and lets teachers and parents see progress.

Parent accounts. Email address, name and phone number, authenticated by Google Firebase Authentication. We record which children a parent has linked.

Device. A device identifier so progress saved on a phone can be restored, and, if you allow it, a local reminder notification. We do not collect precise location, contacts or advertising identifiers.

The AI tutor

Pip is powered by Anthropic’s Claude models. To reply, the app sends the current question, the learner’s first name, class, learning profile and known gaps, and the conversation so far to Anthropic’s API through our server. Anthropic does not use API data to train its models. When the app is offline or no model is configured, a built-in tutor answers with the same rules and nothing leaves the device.

One Plus ID across Plus apps

A learner’s Plus ID is shared with other Plus apps a family chooses to use — Plus Pay (school fees) and Plus Boda (school transport). When a parent links a child in one of those apps, that app asks Plus Learn to verify the child’s Plus ID and PIN and receives only the child’s name, class and school. Learning activity is never shared with them.

Where data lives

Data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore and Firebase (Google Cloud Platform, United States), encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is enforced by security rules: a learner reads and writes only their own records, a parent reads only their linked children, and school staff read only their own school.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
  • We show no ads and use no advertising or third-party analytics SDKs.
  • We do not use learners’ data to train AI models.

Children

Plus Learn is used by school-age children under the supervision of their school and parents. A school enrols each learner and issues their card; parents can see everything their child does in the app. We collect from children only what the learning service needs, and a school or parent can ask us to delete a learner’s data at any time.

Retention and deletion

Learning records are kept while the learner is enrolled with a participating school. Parents can delete their account from the app’s settings, and a school can remove a learner from its directory; associated records are deleted within 30 days. You can also write to us to request deletion.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete personal data we hold about you or your child, in line with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019. Contact us using the details below.

Changes

We may update this policy as the app evolves; the date above reflects the latest revision. Material changes are announced in the app.
